B-2A Bomber model airplane |
| Following
Northrop's earlier experience with flying wings, the company was well placed
to develop an Advanced Technology Bomber (ATB) required by the US Air Force
to replace its elderly B-52s still used in the strategic bombing role since
its entry into service in 1955. The B-2 took to the air for the first time
on July 17, 1989, from Palmdale, California. The airframe is mostly built
of composite radar absorbent honeycomb structure using graphite/epoxy materials,
although some high aluminum and titanium is included. However, this technology
doesn't come cheap, by 1992 B-2 cost was a staggering 1.02 BILLION dollars
EACH, leaving the future of the airplane uncertain. By that time, there
were four of the aircraft flying out of Edwards Air Force Base, California.
The B-2A is powered by four 19,000-lb thrust General Electric F118-GE-100
non-afterburing turbofans, with a maximum speed of 545 mph above 40,000
feet and 569 mph at sea level, service ceiling over 55,000 feet, range
on internal fuel (with 37,300 lb warload) 5,300 nautical miles, and range
at high altitude on internal fuel (with 24,000 LB warload) 6,600 miles.
Airplane armament: two weapons bays located side-by-side under the fuselage
center-section, each fitted with a Boeing Rotary Launcher capable of carrying
eight AGM-69 SRAM II or AGM-129A ACM or AGM-137 Tri-Service Standoff Attack
Missiles; alternative loads can include eight B61 tactical/strategic or
B83 strategic free-fall nuclear bombs, 1,000 lb. Mk 36 sea mines. |
