C-130 Hercules model airplane |
| This
remarkable transport aircraft has already been in production for over 35
years. The first of two YC-130 prototypes was flown on August 23, 1954.
The first production C-130A was then flown on April 7, 1955, and initial
deliveries of the airplane to TAC units began in December 1956. Since that
time more than 2,000 Hercules aircraft have entered service with military
forces and civil operators around the world and, owing to sustained demand,
from 1992 planned production rate remains around 35-37 every year. Well-named
Hercules, Lockheed's medium lifter aircraft has found deployment in far
more than the 12 legendary tasks. One of the most beloved aircraft in Vietnam,
this airplane handled most of the tactical supplies. One airplane was even
outfitted as a gun ship; in one word, it was awesome. The C-130H is powered
by four 4,508 hp Allison T56-A-15 turboprops, giving it a cruising speed
of 374 mph, a service ceiling of 33,000 ft, and a range with maximum payload
of 2,487 miles. |
