| Designed
as a single-seat low/mid-wing monoplane of all-metal construction with
retractable tricycle landing gear, Republic received an initial contract
in March, 1945, for three prototypes. However, development of the airplane
was bedeviled by a series of problems, in particular those of growing structural
weight and low engine thrust, but when the first two prototypes were flown,
on February 28 and in August , 1946, it was soon discovered that Republic
had created another high-performance aircraft; confirmed in September,
1946, when one of the prototypes established a new US national speed record
of 611 mph. Last of the so-called straight-wing F-84 airplanes was the
F-84G (3,025 built), which was the first single-seat fighter to have the
capability of deploying nuclear weapons. Powered by the 5,600-lb. thrust
J35-A-29 turbojet, the F84G could carry 4,000 lbs. of stores externally,
had provision for inflight refueling, and, because this made long-range
missions possible, was equipped with an autopilot. The prototype for the
swept wing F-84F made its first flight on June 3, 1950. All but 375 of
the 2,713 aircraft that were built had the 7,220-lb. thrust Wright J65-W-3
turbojet. The F-84F had a maximum speed of 695 mph at sea level; service
ceiling of 46,000 ft.; and combat radius with drop tanks of 810 miles.
Airplane armament was six 50-caliber Browning M3 machine guns, plus up
to 6,000 lbs. of external stores. |
