F-106A Delta Dart model airplane |
| Two
F-106A prototypes made their first flights on December 26, 1956 and February
26, 1957, but flight tests were initially disappointing, and a shortage
of funds almost caused the USAF to scrap the entire F-106 program; but
so much had already been spent that it seemed sensible to continue development
of the airplane so that the US Air Force would eventually acquire a smaller
but high-quality force of interceptors. Finally, deliveries began in October,
1959. Production of 277 F-106A single seat fighters and 63 F-106B two-seat
combat trainers (which retained full combat capability) ended in December,
1960. Circumstances demanded that the F-106s remained in front-line service
long beyond their originally anticipated life, which has meant that updating
programs for the airplane have been almost continuous since that time.
After more than 20 years' service with the USAF, F-106s were finally withdrawn
from service in 1988. This single-seat supersonic all-weather interceptor
aircraft was powered by one 24,500-lb. afterburning thrust Pratt &
Whitney J75-P-17 turbojet, with a maximum speed of Mach 2.31 (or 1,525
mph) at 40,000 feet, a service ceiling of 57,000 feet, and a combat radius
with external fuel tanks of 729 miles. Airplane armament was one Douglas
AIR-2A Genie or AIR-2B Super Genie rocket, and four Hughes AIM-4F or AIM-4G
Super Falcon air-to-air missiles carried in internal weapons bay; many
aircraft also have one 20-mm M61 Vulcan gun in place of Genie. |

Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand. |
