Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star model airplane
The design of what was to become the first operational jet fighter of the US Army Air Corps began in June 1934, tailored around the 3,000-lb thrust British Halford H.1B turbojet. The first Lockheed XP-80 prototype with this powerplant was flown initially on January 8, 1944. The P-80 Shooting Star began to enter service in early 1945, and a total of 45 aircraft had been delivered by the time World War II ended. When production ended, Lockheed had built a total of 1,732 P-80 (later F-80) airplanes; but far more successful was the T-33A two seat trainer airplane. Basically an F-80 with a lengthened fuselage to accommodate a second seat in tandem, the T-33A has served with more than 30 air forces. Over 6,000 aircraft were built, and a considerable number of these airplanes remain in service. The final production version, the F-80C, used one 5,400-lb thrust Allison J33-A-35 turbojet, with a maximum speed at sea level of 594 mph, service ceiling of 46,800 feet, and range of 825 miles.
