B-36 Peacemaker SAC model airplane |
| The
first intercontinental bomber, the Convair B-36 originated from a specification
issued on April 11, 1941, which called for an aircraft with the ability
to deliver 10,000 pounds of bombs on European targets from bases in the
United States. The first prototype flew on August 8, 1946, and the first
production airplane flew on August 28, 1947. The B-36J version had additional
outer wing fuel tanks and strengthened landing gear for 410,000 lb. operation,
of which 33 airplanes were manufactured, the first airplane flying on September
3.1953, and some aircraft were later modified by the deletion of all but
the tail turret armament, reducing the crew complement to nine men. Production
of the B-36 continued for almost seven years, the last airplane being delivered
to SAC on August 14, 1954. The B-36 was retired finally on February 12,
1959. The B-36J was powered by six 3,800-hp Pratt & Whitney R-4360-53
radial piston engines and four 5,200-lb thrust General Electric J47-GE-19
turbojets. The airplane had a maximum speed of 411 mph at 36,400 feet,
cruising speed of 391 mph, service ceiling of 39,900 feet, and a range
of 6,800 miles with a 10,000-lb bombload. Airplane armament was 6 retractable
and remotely controlled fuselage turrets, each with twin 20-mm M24A1 cannon,
and similar weapons in nose and tail, plus a maximum bombload of 86,000
lbs with weight restrictions, or more normally up to 72,000 lbs. |
All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted
Mahogany and comes fully assembled with removable desk stand. |
