Republic P-47 Thunderbolt model airplane
Most famous of all Republic aircraft, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, designed by Alexander Kartveli, had a significant role to play in World War II, and was built to an astonishing total of 15,677 airplanes before production came to an end with the cancellation of outstanding contracts after VJ-Day. Like many other major combat aircraft, the P-47 acquired two nicknames bestowed affectionately by its pilots to a friend that had been tried and trusted in battle. "Jug", a diminutive of Juggernaut that described its ample proportions, and "T-bolt" derived from its officially given name. Even when the prototype airplane flew for the first time on May, 6, 1941, this single-seat fighter-bomber gave an immediate hint of its potential. Reliable and able to absorb an enormous amount of punishment from enemy weapons, the P-47 is credited with the destruction of 4.6 enemy airplanes for the loss of each one of its own number. Even after being phased out of service by the US in 1954, the Thunderbolt had many more years of service in several other countries. The P-47D was powered by one 2,535-hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800-59W Double Wasp redial piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed, clean, of 433 mph; service ceiling of 41,000 feet; and a range with drop-tanks of 1,900 miles. Airplane armament was eight 50-caliber machine guns, plus external load of up to 2,500 lbs of bombs, napalm, or rockets.
