P2V Neptune model airplane |
| The
first prototype of this long-range maritime patrol aircraft was flown on
May 17, 1945, and P2V-1s began to enter service in March, 1947, and proved
effective in their role. One airplane named "The Turtle" set a world piston-engined
distance record in 1946. The Korean War expanded the requirement for such
aircraft, and the later involvement of the United States in Southeast Asia,
plus need to provide similar capability for the Western allies, kept Lockheed
busy producing P2Vs in a multiplicity of versions, with the final production
figure totaling 1,181 airplanes. The P2V-5F was a major production version
of the aircraft, with 424 airplanes built. The P2V-7 was the final production
version with 287 airplanes built. This aircraft used two 3,500-hp Wright
R-3350-32-W Turbo-Compound radial piston engines, plus two 3,400-lb. thrust
Westinghouse J34-WE-36 auxiliary turbojets. This final version had a maximum
speed of 403 mph at 14,000 feet, service ceiling of 22,000 feet, and a
maximum range of 3,685 miles. Airplane armament was twin 50-caliber machine
guns in dorsal turret, plus provision for underwing rockets and up to 8,000
lbs. of bombs, depth charges, or torpedoes. |
