Model Douglas DC-8 model airplane |
| Aware
that Boeing was well advanced with its Model 707, and anxious to maintain
a substantial share of the market for civil transports, Douglas announced
on June 7, 1955, its intention of developing a turbojet-powered airliner
to supersede the DC-7, and design of the Douglas DC-8 went ahead without
delay. One prototype demonstrator was built, and when this first airplane
flew on May 30, 1958, it was seen to be very similar externally to the
Boeing 707. FAA approval was awarded on August 31, 1959, with Delta Airlines
and United Air Lines becoming recipients of the first airplanes. The Douglas
DC-8-63 was powered by four 19,000-lb. thrust Pratt & Whitney JT3D-7
turbofans, giving the airplane a maximum cruising speed of 600 mph at 30,000
feet, economic cruising speed of 523 mph, and a range with maximum payload
of 4,500 miles. |
All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted
Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand. |
