| Announced
simultaneously with the Model 757, the Boeing Model 767 introduced a completely
new fuselage structure which is 4 feet 1 inch wider, providing seven- or
eight- abreast seating with two aisles. In high-density eight-abreast configuration
this airplane could accommodate a maximum of 289 passengers. The first
Model 767 was rolled out at Everett, Washington, on August 4, 1981, and
made a 2 hour 4 minute maiden flight there on September 26th. This was,
incredibly, a few days ahead of the target date set when the program was
launched in 1978. (How often does that happen!) The airplane is also offered
in an ER (extended range) version, with increased fuel capacity and takeoff
weight for long-range operations. The Model 767-200 was powered by two
Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7R4D turbofans, each developing approximately
48,000-lb. thrust, giving the airplane a normal cruising speed Mach 0.8,
approach speed of 154 mph, service ceiling of 39,000 feet, and a design
range with 211 passenger of 3,201 miles. |
