T-37A and T-37B Tweetie Bird model airplane |
| The
first prototype of this aircraft, designated by Cessna as a Model 318,
made its maiden flight on October 12, 1954. It was exceptional in having
the pupil and instructor seated in what had long been considered to be
an ideal side-by-side arrangement (contrary to the normal U. S. practice
of tandem seating). The first production planes (T-37As) didn't enter service
until 1957, after a number of changes and modifications.. The T-37B, with
more powerful engines and improved nav/com systems, was introduced into
service in November 1959, and all surviving T-37As were converted to this
standard. On May 2, 1967, the USAF started taking delivery of the A-37
Dragonfly a version of the T-37 with armament and increased power, for
use in Vietnam. When production of the A-37 ended later in 1967, 577 had
been built; serving with the USAF, the Air National Guard, the South Vietnam
air force, and in small numbers to other friendly nations. Production of
the T-37 continued until 1977, with a total of 1,268 being built. |
