American F-100D Super Sabre model airplane |
| The
first of the prototypes was flown on April 24, 1953, exceeding Mach 1 during
this initial flight, and October 29, 1953 was a "red letter day" when the
first production aircraft was flown and the first prototype established
a new world speed record of 754.99 mph. When it became operational in 1954,
it was the world's first operational fighter capable of supersonic performance
in level flight. The most extensively built of the F-100's was the F100D
attack version with many changes, including a flapped wing provisions for
internal ECM equipment, and introduction of the LABS (low-altitude bombing
system) for so-called toss delivery of nuclear weapons. A total of 1,274
F-100Ds were built. Many Super Sabres were used extensively by the USAF
in Vietnam. |
