Douglas C-17 Globemaster III model airplane |
| The
first prototype for the C-17 was flown for the first time on September
15, 1991. When the price per plane escalated to $294 million from the original
target price of $125 million, the requirement was reduced from 210 planes
to 120 planes. The C-17 is configured similarly to the Galaxy and the StarLifter,
and about the same size as the latter. With a 3-man flight deck crew, the
C-17A can carry up to 102 paratroopers, while the main hold can accommodate
AH-64 helicopters, M1 Abrams main battle tanks, or five-ton expanding vehicles.
Access is via the hydraulically-powered rear ramp stressed to take loads
of up to 40,000 pounds. The C-17 has a maximum cruising speed at low altitude
of 403 mph, cruising speed at altitude of Mach 0.77, and ferry range on
internal fuel of 5,412 miles. |
All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted
Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand. |
