F-5E Tiger II and IV model airplane |
| Originally
developed to meet a US government requirement for a comparatively inexpensive
combat aircraft for supply to friendly nations under the Military Assistance
Program, the first F-5 prototype flew on July 30, 1959. The F-5E was a
later improved version of the F-5 providing 23 per cent more thrust that
the engines of the F-5A. The F-5E Tiger II had a number of modifications
to improve maneuverability and short-field performance, greater fuel capacity,
and an integrated fire-control (though without radar). The first production
F-5E was flown on August 11, 1972, and accepted into USAF service on April
4, 1973. A measure of the capability of the F-5E may be gained by the fact
that the top air combat training schools in the U.S. used F-5Es as "enemy"
aircraft in combat training against U.S. squadrons of first-line operational
tactical fighters. The various versions of the F-5 have served with the
air forces of many countries worldwide. The F-5E had a maximum speed of
1,083 mph at 36,000 ft, service ceiling of 51,800 ft, and a maximum range
with fuel drop tanks of 1,543 miles. Armament consisted of two 20-mm M-39
cannon in fuselage nose and two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles on wingtip launchers,
plus up to 7,000 lb of mixed stores. |
All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted
