| On
14 October 1947, General (then Captain) Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager became
the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. At. 10:30 AM on
that fall morning he piloted the X-1 to a speed of Mach 1.06 (700 mph)
@ 43,000 feet above the high desert of California over Muroc Air Base (now
Edwards AFB). In doing this he ushered in a new era, the Space Age. On
the 50th anniversary of this event, he commemorated it by flying the F-15E,
Glamorous Glennis, through the sound barrier at the exact same time and
place. |
