during the Korean War, the prototype of this airplane was flown on June
22, 1954, and the first preproduction aircraft on August 14, 1954, with
initial deliveries to US Navy Attack Squadron VA-72 beginning on October
26, 1956. Three months later, in January 1957, VMA-224 became the first
US Marine Corps squadron to receive Skyhawks. It was a fortunate period
in which to introduce this sparkling new attack aircraft, for by the time
the US Navy and US Marines became involved in operations in Vietnam, both
of these services were able to deploy the Skyhawk with the greatest confidence
in its capability; indeed, such was its effectiveness that steadily improving
A-4s remained in production until February 1979, built to a total of 2,960
aircraft, including trainers, and exported to the armed forces of several
nations. The Skyhawk continues in service with the US Navy and US Marine
Corps in a training role, and other nations whose armed forces are equipped
with this airplane include Argentina, Indonesia, Israel, Kuwait, Malaysia,
New Zealand, and Singapore. The A-4M introduced a number of improvements,
equipped with braking parachute and the more powerful 11,200-lb thrust
Pratt & Whitney J52-P-408A turbojet engine, capable of a maximum speed
at sea level of 670 mph, with a tactical radius of 340 miles with a 4,000
lb bomb load. Airplane armament was two 20-mm cannons, plus up to 9,155
pounds of weapons on five external hardpoints. There were 162 A-4Ms built. |
All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted
Mahogany and comes fully assembled with removable desk stand. |
