P-80 Shooting Star model airplane |
| The
design of what was to become the first operational jet fighter of the US
Army Air Force began in June, 1934, with the first prototype being flown
on January 8, 1944. The P-80 Shooting Star began to enter USAAF service
in early 1945, and a total of 45 had been delivered by the time World War
II ended. When production ended, Lockheed had built a total of 1,732 P-80s
(later designated F-80). Even more successful was the T-33 Shooting Star,
a lengthened fuselage version to accommodate a second seat in tandem, of
which more than 6,000 aircraft were built. The P-80C had a top speed of
594 mph at sea level, service ceiling of 46,800 ft, and a range of 825
miles. |
