American P-82G / F-82G Twin Mustang model airplane |
| The
P-82 Twin Mustang was essentially two P-51 Mustangs joined together for
longer range, and usually flown from the left-hand seat, with its radar
carried in a giant centerline pod on the P-82G night-fighter. In 1948 all
production B to G variants were redesignated from P-82 to F-82. The P-82
was the first US aircraft to operate over Korea, and was the first aircraft
to destroy an enemy aircraft in the Korean War. The P/F-82G had a maximum
speed of 461 mph at 21,000 ft, service ceiling of 38.900 ft, and a maximum
range of 2,240 miles. It had six wing-mounted 12.7mm machine guns, plus
up to four 1,000 lb bombs, or four auxiliary fuel tanks on the underwing
racks. |
